Kent to Portugal, one certificate

Portugal's process turns on a single document, and that document is built from the inventory we write while packing. Everything else on this route follows from getting those two to agree.

The document that governs the rest

The certificado de bagagem records the goods you are importing as used personal effects belonging to you. It is issued by the Portuguese consulate covering your Kent address, before the goods travel, and it is built directly from the inventory.

Which is why the inventory on a Portuguese job is written with more care than on any other route: itemised, valued in Portuguese, checked by you, and matching what will actually be on the vehicle.

Loading once

The drive crosses France and almost the whole Iberian peninsula with mandatory rest built in. A second trip is not an inconvenience here, it is a second move — so the loft, the garage, the shed and anything undecided are all settled before the vehicle arrives rather than during the loading.

The route

Out through the Kent crossing; Rouen, Le Mans, Tours and Poitiers to Bordeaux; the Spanish border at Irún; Burgos, Valladolid and Salamanca; then Vilar Formoso. From there the A25 west for Aveiro and Porto, or the A23 and A1 south for Coimbra, Lisbon, the Alentejo and the Algarve.

Storage while the file finishes

The longest paperwork lead time of the four countries, a fixed UK completion date, and a drive nobody wants to repeat. Holding the household in store in Kent until the NIF, the certificate and the property are all real is the arrangement most of these moves end up using.

At the far end

The Algarve is mostly workable, with hillside villas above the older towns the exception. The cities are harder — Lisbon and Porto are steep, cobbled and narrow, and window hoists are routine rather than unusual there.

Spain shares most of this drive if you are weighing the two.

Worth knowing

Kent to Portugal, the long route explained

Why does the certificate depend on the inventory?

Because the certificate lists the household goods being imported as your used personal effects, and that list comes from the inventory. If the two disagree, clearance stops while somebody reconciles them — the commonest Portuguese delay and a wholly avoidable one.

How early does the NIF need to happen?

First, before the property and before the move. Renting, buying, residency and customs all depend on it, and obtaining it has nothing to do with the removal itself.

What is the route?

Out through the Kent crossing, the western length of France to Bordeaux, into Spain at Irún, then across Iberia through Burgos, Valladolid and Salamanca to the border at Vilar Formoso — and from there west for Porto or south for Lisbon and the Algarve.

Why is loading once so important?

Because the drive crosses two countries with statutory rest built into it. A second trip is effectively a second move, so the inventory must be complete and the household genuinely ready before the vehicle is loaded.

Is Algarve access difficult?

Mostly not. Coastal villas and apartments generally have room to park and a workable approach. Hillside properties above the older towns are the exception, with drives that are steep, narrow and sometimes unmade.

Lisbon and Porto?

Steep cobbled streets, tight corners and staircases as narrow as anything in a Medway terrace. In Alfama or Ribeira a hoist through a window is a normal method, established before the load leaves rather than on arrival.

Can we store in Kent while the file completes?

It is the usual arrangement on this route. The longest paperwork lead time of the four countries meets a UK completion date set by somebody else, and storage is what reconciles them.

Apply for the NIF first. Everything else follows it.

The Portuguese file cannot begin without it, and the file — not the drive — is what sets the date.
